The 36-Hour Generator Rescue: Fuel Pump, Breaker, and a Briggs & Stratton 22kW

A little after six on a Thursday evening in March 2024, the phone buzzed. Dave, a restaurant owner two towns over, didn't say hello. 'I think we're going to have to cancel Saturday,' he said. His standby generator had just died. The grand opening was less than 36 hours away.

I coordinate emergency service calls for a generator dealer in the Northeast. We sell Briggs & Stratton equipment, maintain older units, and handle more than a few last-minute repairs. Building a solar generator for that load means calculating panel wattage, battery banks, charge controller size, and inverter surge capacity. To handle the startup surge on one 5kW AC unit alone, you'd need a serious system. Add a dishwasher, and you're basically designing a commercial solar installation, not a weekend project.

There's also a reason the FTC advertising guidelines require energy and environmental claims to be truthful and substantiated. Not every 'solar generator' video walks you through the real numbers. Some do. Some don't. The ones that don't are why Dave's question needed a straight answer.

From my perspective, the best use of solar is for the loads you can't control: a few lights, a modem, a fan. For the loads that have to stay on automatically, a properly sized standby generator is still the more reliable tool.

What I Learned From the 36-Hour Save

In my first few years in this business, I probably would have told Dave to just buy the biggest generator we sold and be done. That was a rookie mistake. What I've learned is that the first fault code is not always the root problem. You have to test under load, not just in your head.

I still kick myself about the jobs from those early years where I stopped too soon. If I'd had a solid load-test procedure, the customer could have avoided a second service call. That's not a great look.

This job confirmed something else: honest recommendations matter. Dave trusted me because I didn't oversell the 22kW, and I didn't pretend a solar generator would run his business. A vendor who says 'this works for your situation'—and then tells you when it doesn't—is the kind people call back.
