The Call That Came at 10 PM
It was mid-March 2024, and a severe thunderstorm had just rolled through our county. Power was out across three neighborhoods. My phone rang at 10:07 PM – a client who’d rented a Briggs & Stratton Generator 2200 for a small medical clinic backup. Their normal electrician was unreachable, and they were desperate. The Battery Voltage Check
Before diving into fuel, I wanted to rule out the starting battery. The Briggs 2200 uses a 12V battery for electric start, and a weak battery can cause the controller to behave oddly. I pulled out my multimeter (a Fluke 117, nothing fancy) and did a quick check:
- Open-circuit voltage: 12.3V (about 70% charge – borderline but should start)
- Under cranking load: dropped to 10.1V (still within spec for that engine starter)

So I moved to the fuel system. The ff100-2 fuel filter is a common replacement part on these generators – a small inline filter between the tank and carburetor. I’ve changed dozens of them. The customer mentioned they’d used some old stored gasoline about a month ago. I removed the filter, blew through it, and got almost no airflow. That was the obstruction.
Now here’s the twist: earlier that day, the client’s handyman had already tried to fix it by replacing the hood control panel (he assumed the error code meant a bad controller). They’d wasted $120 on a part they didn’t need, and still had no power. That’s the causation reversal I keep warning about – people see a controller error and think the controller is the cause. Most often, the controller is just a messenger.
I swapped in a new FF100-2 (cost: $8.50 from my truck stock), primed the system by cranking with the choke closed, and the generator fired up after about 8 seconds. The clinic had power within 5 minutes of my diagnosis. Total time on site: 22 minutes.
What I Learned (and Why This Matters for Installers)
This experience reinforced something I’ve been telling my team for years: the industry is evolving, but the fundamentals haven’t changed. Five years ago, I wouldn’t have had a printed fault code table in my truck – I’d have called Briggs technical support and waited on hold. Now, with QR codes on control panels and smartphone apps, a technician can get fault codes instantly. But that speed can also trick you into skipping basic checks.

My experience is based on about 200 emergency generator calls, mostly on units between 2 kW and 10 kW (the 2200 is a 2.2 kW portable). If you’re working with large standby units or diesel generators, your experience might differ – especially on fuel system complexity. So take this with a grain of salt: for portable gas generators, the FF100-2 filter is a common failure point after a few months of use or poor fuel.
One more thing: if you’re a distributor or installer, consider stocking FF100-2 fuel filters in your service vans. They cost pennies and can save a trip. Also, label the hood control panel with a sticker that says “Check fault code before replacing.” That $8.50 filter can prevent a $120 controller swap that doesn’t fix the problem.
That night, the clinic ran on backup power until grid restoration at 4 AM. The client’s alternative was a $2,500 transfer to another facility – which we avoided. And I made a mental note to carry two extra FF100-2s in my bag (note to self: check inventory weekly).
