Last June, a client called me at 7:30 PM. "My trailer batteries keep dying. I just replaced them. The charger says it's working. What do I do?" He had a 27-foot travel trailer, a brand-new battery bank, and a generator that some friend swore would run "everything." By 5 AM the fridge controller was dead and the battery was sitting at 12.1V.
In my role doing emergency electrical repair for RV parks and commercial clients, I get this call after the easy fixes fail. The battery's been swapped. The charger's been swapped. The fuses are fine. So people blame the trailer, the weather, or the battery brand. The real problem is almost always the electricity feeding the charger.
The Surface Problem: Everybody Points at the Battery
"It's the battery" is the easiest answer. It's also wrong more often than you'd think. Over the last two seasons, I've logged more than 200 dead-battery calls. The battery was the actual problem in maybe a fifth of them. Most of the time, the charger was fine. The battery was fine. The 120V side was not.
A travel trailer battery charger—basically a converter—turns 120V AC into 13.6 to 14.4V DC. That's its whole job. If the AC side has a wiring fault or unstable voltage, the converter never gets into a real bulk charge. It floats. The battery never fills. So it dies overnight, and everybody blames the battery. The "battery quality" thinking comes from an era when converters were simple and batteries were tough. That changed.
Deep Cause #1: The Generator Is Making "Dirty" Power
Not all 120V is the same. A conventional open-frame generator produces a waveform with harmonic distortion. Some battery chargers handle it. Many don't. They overheat. They shut down. Or they quit early and tell you the battery is full when it isn't.
When I compared a conventional open-frame generator and an inverter generator side by side on the same travel trailer battery charger, the difference was obvious. The charger on the open-frame unit whined, ran hot, and put out about 12.9V. On the inverter unit, it ran quiet and pushed 14.2V. Same charger. Same battery. Different power source.
That's where a Briggs & Stratton generator comes in. The Briggs and Stratton P2200 generator is a small inverter unit that's plenty for a converter, trailer lights, and phone chargers. The Briggs & Stratton P3000 generator gives you more headroom if you want to add the rooftop AC. Both use inverter tech to deliver a cleaner sine wave than comparably sized open-frame units. Deep Cause #2: The Plug Wiring Is Lying to You
Second thing I check is the receptacle. In a 30-amp RV setup, the standard is NEMA TT-30R: hot, neutral, ground. Neutral and ground need to stay separate downstream. When someone bonds them together in an adapter or a generator outlet, current can flow on the ground wire. The charger still works, sort of, but it can cook the battery slowly and confuse every test.
Most electrical plug wiring mistakes are invisible. A three-light tester catches reversed hot and neutral. It won't catch an open neutral under load. So I use a multimeter. With the converter running, read between hot and neutral at the trailer panel. It should be roughly 110 to 125V. If it drops below about 108V, the wiring or the generator is too small. Then read between neutral and ground. More than a volt or two means the neutral isn't doing its job. Fix that before you buy a battery.
Deep Cause #3: The Hookup Method Is Working Against You
Then there's the "how to hook up battery charger" part. It sounds too basic to matter. But I've pulled portable chargers out of trailers where the clamps were connected to one battery while the converter was connected to the same battery. Two chargers fighting. One says fully charged, backs off. The other is trying to bulk charge a bank that's still hungry. Net result? No meaningful charge.
For direct battery charging, the rule is simple: red to positive, black to negative, and everything else disconnected or isolated. Plug the charger into the generator outlet first, then connect the clamps. If you're using the trailer's converter instead, make sure it's actually charging and not stuck in fault mode. A converter that stays at 12.8V all day is a float charger, not a battery charger.
What This Costs You
Ignoring these three things is expensive. In July 2024, I did an emergency call for a campground with a 30-amp RV pad wired by a well-meaning handyman. The traveler's converter kept resetting. The owner had already bought two new batteries and a $200 smart charger. The cause? A 12-gauge extension cord running 100 feet from a conventional generator. Under load, the voltage sagged to about 104V. The converter couldn't hold its output, so it reset. A 10-gauge cord and an inverter generator fixed it in ten minutes. Missing that repair would have meant losing a $5,000 music festival contract.
Another one: a commercial client lost a $12,000 mobile workshop job because their custom trailer kept killing batteries. They tried three chargers and two battery banks. The actual issue was a burnt neutral splice inside the pigtail. One wire. $35 worth of labor. So glad I checked ground voltage before condemning another converter.
The pattern repeats: people buy batteries when they really need a wiring audit.
The Fix: A Short, Honest Version
Here's the short version. You don't need a degree in electrical engineering. Do these three things in order.
- Clean up the power. Use an inverter generator if you're charging a travel trailer battery from a generator. My usual starting point is a Briggs and Stratton P2200 generator for a 30-amp trailer that needs to keep the battery topped up and run small loads. Need the roof AC too? Look at the Briggs & Stratton P3000 generator. Don't hold me to exact ratings—check your manual—but don't expect a 2,200-watt unit to run a 50-amp fifth wheel.
- Verify the plug wiring. Use a plug tester or multimeter. Check hot-neutral voltage under load and neutral-ground voltage near zero. Fix reversed polarity or neutral-ground bonding before spending anything.
- Hook up the charger properly. Positive to positive, negative to negative. Plug the charger into clean power, then connect the clamps. If using the converter, let it run for a few hours and watch the battery voltage climb. If it never reaches 13.2V, the charger isn't charging.
I have mixed feelings about telling people to buy a new generator. On one hand, a $25 cord fixes half the diagnoses I see. On the other, if your open-frame generator makes your charger whine, the $25 cord won't matter. Clean power is the foundation.
And let me be honest about limits. A P3000 isn't a magic fix for every RV. A 50-amp residential fifth wheel with multiple ACs needs more than a suitcase inverter. And no generator will fix a corroded neutral bond. Match the tool to the fault.
So next time your travel trailer battery dies, don't reach for a third battery. Ask what the charger saw while it was running. A travel trailer battery charger only works when the electricity in front of it is clean, wired right, and connected the right way. Get those three things right, and battery life takes care of itself.
